Our first longer than a marathon run on trail, and our first anything near this long run in Singapore. The event runs from 7am to 7pm during which period the runner who completes the longest distance is the winner. That is not our goal, but to finish five 10K loops which gives us an official finisher status and a jersey. And we do just that. We run the first four loops in an hour and a half or less, but the last one takes us more than two hours. We are not out of energy or strength, but already on a third loop we have some chafing and blister issues, also some pain in knees and tender soles because of very rocky and uneven terrain. After running three loops, we have lunch, offered by the event organizers. We also change to new shoes and socks, plus jerseys and Tei even new shorts to replace the totally soaked ones. After this the fourth loop goes ok, although we feel the downhills in our knees, so we decide to walk up and down slopes and run on the flat, when not too rocky. We mostly walk the fourth loop. It also starts raining and some parts of the trail become really muddy. It is not slippery but just wet. Since we mostly run in a forest, there are not too many people to cheer on us. So, it is left to us runners to cheer on each other. We get a lot of attention, probably because we are the only white couple running the race. |
