"Are you guys runners? You look like runners.
They are my favorite kind of people."

Comments We visited five or six (or more?) bicycle shops today (some of them were closed, though) before we got a number to call which eventually may help us find what we are looking for, and that is a front rack that fits a mountain bike with suspension fork and disc brakes. All the shops were on the East side of the island, which is mostly unknown to us. In the first shop were told that there is a Cannondale retailer in Singapore, which have been most impossible to find online. We have Cannondale panniers, both back and front, so we hoped to find racks for the front panniers. No hope there, since no one tours in Singapore, we are told: the guy at the Cannondale wasn't particularly friendly or eager to help anyway, unlike the guy at Axis from whom we got info about Cyclecraft, where we finally got contact to this guy, who looks really promising.

Exercise Run
Course Around the NUS campus
Distance 5.8K
Time 40:21
Pace Avg 6:56, max 6:02
HR Avg 138, max 154
Comments If I have not told this before, but the National University of Singapore campus in built on a hill, which is pretty steep at places, and has long gradual slopes at others. And we are moving towards the hottest time of the year, so we expect these late morning runs to become even more uncomfortable.

@ Thu 28/01/2010
Exercise BodyAttack
Comments Tougher than usual. We both felt a bit weak before the class, but it is easy to forget all queasiness when running and jumping up and down, left and right, forward and back.

@ Wed 27/01/2010
Exercise Run
Coures West Coast Park (WCP)
Distance 6.14K
Time 41:47

Exercise BodyPump
Comments Tei attended the class, Tomi just went to the gym. The current BP program is really hard for arms.

@ Mon 25/01/2010
Exercise Pilates
Comments We did quite a variety of things today: from push-ups to plies, from "hundreds" to bicycling.

Exercise Run
Course Treadmill
Distance 5K
Time 25:33
Pace 5'27"
HR Avg 157, max 163
Comments Why is running on a treadmill so much harder than on the road or trail or even track?

@ Wed 20/01/2010
Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 6.48K
Time 41:02
Pace Avg 6:19, max 5:34
HR Avg 312, max 140
Comments Today we can really say it was a cooler morning. However, it was also foggy or hazy, but really comfortable to run.

@ Tue 19/01/2010
Exercise BodyPump
Comments We tried a morning session for a change. The new programme is pretty hard on legs which are already tired from the weekend's climbing.

@ Mon 18/01/2010
Exercise Pilates
Comments A relatively easy class. However, as we feared, we did some demi-plies and grande-plies, which were quite hard after a weekend of hiking and running hills.

@ Sun 17/01/2010
Exercise Run
Course Kent Ridge Park
Distance 6.27K
Time 43:26
Pace Avg 6;55, max 5:49
HR Avg 134, max 158
Comments Back on hills --- an easy recovery run to Kent Ridge. The heart rate did not even get up to 160 in either major hill.

Exercise Hiking
Comments Another afternoon hike with colleagues, this time in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. It took us an hour and a half to reach the summit, which is only about 165 meters high. The fact that we took a relatively long, steep and hilly trail there, not the direct way, explains the time. We came down in 15 minutes. Yesterday we learned that there are still some patches of primary forest in Bukit Timah, most of which is located nearer the MacRitchie Reservoir, though.

After the descent we visited Hindhede Quarry, an abandoned granite quarry that operated until the 1980's. When the quarry functions stopped, the place started to fill with water, since the granite is impermeable. The original water level was at 18 meters below the sea level, and was rising in 1990's about 3.5 meters a year. With that pace the quarry was predicted to overflow at 35 meters above the sea level in 2008. Apparently it did not happen, but the depth of about 50 meters is still impressive.

We spent quite a while observing a baby turtle swimming with his mom in the quarry. Afterwards, we had a late lunch at OldTown White Coffee.

Exercise Walking
Comments GoGreen committee at our work, which Tei is a member of, organized an afternoon walk in Southern Ridges with Singapore National Parks. We learned some anecdotal pieces of information of Singapore's history as well as facts of its natural environment. Among the trees we saw were saga tree, rain tree, rubber tree, several different kinds of fig trees, pulai tree, sea almond, and palm and pine trees. The weather was quite favorable: we got neither rain or shine.

The pictures on right feature a house of a former Arab spice trader, which later hosted a restaurant, closed since the economic crisis caused by SARS, and some colonial houses built by British and now occupied by upper middle class expats, such as some Finns, as we notice.

Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 6.38K
Time 41:42'6
Pace Avg 6;32, max 5:40
HR Abg 130, max 141
Comments Cool sunrise run. Abslutely no clouds in the sky which is very rare here.

@ Mon 11/01/2010
Exercise Pilates
Comments Back in Felicia's torture chamber.

@ Sun 10/01/2010
Exercise Run
Course Pandan Reservoir
Distance 15.12K
Time 1:45'12
Pace Avg 6:57, max 5:50
HR Avg 144, max 164 (Tomi: Avg 156, max 166)
Comments We went to run around the Pandan reservoir, which we really shouldn't do when the sky is clear like today. Fortunately, some clouds started gathering and there was a nice breeze, but still it was excruciatingly hot.

Recently we upgraded our running gear quite a bit: we both have brand new heart rate monitors and foot pods --- Tomi has a Suunto and Tei has a Polar. We also made some investments to apparel that is supposed to keep our heads cool and the sweat from the eyes. Yesterday, we got new bicycle glasses in the nearby spectacle shop. The salesperson spent about an hour with us explaining things and suggesting different models. We were happy about the good service and our new Oakleys. As a promotion we received ultra-cool carbon fiber cases for our glasses.

Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 6.58K
Time 39:01
Pace Avg 5:55, max 4:45
HR Avg 143, max 155
Comments Tei ran alone again, a bit faster. However, should increase the weekly mileage instead.

@ Thu 07/01/2010
Exercise BodyAttack
Comments We have not been in this class for ages, but it is still basically the same: running, jumping jacks, superman, shuffling, with slight variations. The upper body section in the middle is still hard: this time we did tricep and regular push-ups and planks. Only Tei went to the class, since Tomi is attending a workshop on campus.

@ Wed 06/01/2010
Comments We went to watch the AFC Asian Cup 2011 qualifier between Islamic Republic of Iran and Singapore at the National Stadium. For some reason we ended up spending the first half in the section reserved for Iranian football fans, which made about 5% of the spectators, 90% of the noise and were surrounded by 99% of the security guards. Obviously the guards and police officers were clueless what to do with cheering fans, so they kept snatching flags from them, and telling them to stay in place. The guards also confiscated any bottles, full or empty, but allowed people to fill cups from them. It did not make any sense to us either! Anyway, we were really happy to see so many women in the audience.

Iran scored twice early in the match, the first goal from the penalty kick, and thereafter Singapore showed very little willingness to play. With the 3-1 win Iran guaranteed a place in the final that will be played in Qatar.

Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 6.27K
Time 41:52

Exercise Bicycling
Course Desaru, Malaysia
Distance 297.17K (40.59 + 49.58 + 117.95 + 89.02)
Times 2:23'22 + 3:00'25 + 6:41'50 + 4:53'57
Comments TnT spends the new year's extended weekend on wheels. This is our longest bicycle trip in Asia so far. We are blessed with a lot of sunshine (too much!) but some unfavorable wind.

As usual we start with an afternoon ride to Changi Village on Pasir Panjang, Telok Blangah, and Keppel Road to Nicoll Highway, and finally to East Coast Park. The park is a nightmare as usual with a erratic riders and all (we've ranted over this enough before). We have head wind all the way. Still we make it to the Village in almost two hours.

Next morning at the Changi Point it takes us just 30 minutes to get boarded. The gasoline smell is strong and the sea is quite rough today, so it is hard not to feel sick on the bumboat ride. Plus some people smoke in the boat, and dump the empty cigarette boxes in the ocean :(

From the ferry terminal we have a strong head wind to Pulai Desaru Beach Resort: it takes us three hours to cover just 40 kilometers. This is the second time we ride in Pengerang, so the landscape looks at least moderately familiar.

Saturday starts mostly sunny and breezeless. We have ahead of us about 50 kilometers of a quiet country road that follows the coastline of South China Sea. Except for occasional potholes, the road itself is in rather good condition, and there is practically no traffic: a car or a motorbike passes us every fifteen to twenty minutes. A pack of ten or something bicyclists, mostly teenagers probably from one of the beach resorts, come up and they are the only riders we see today.

After a couple of hours we reach an area with several kampungs, which conveniently come with restaurants and stalls serving drinks and snacks. We get a lot of honks from by-passing vehicles but we take them to be friendly ones: in general the drivers behave nicely, and pass us at distance and do not speed up when passing. The kids are also the same everywhere: we hear "hellos" or "bye byes" from houses and yards, and it doesn't stop until we greet them back. We probably make their day for weeks :)

Ten more kilometers and we find two stalls at a crossing that sell fruits. Vendors or just customers, we can't tell, are eager to get us in for some kopi, iced juice, and pisang goreng, which this time is served with chili sauce.

We have had some earlier today, but now we hit the hills. We have done 30K uphills with 6-10% grades before, even with the full load of panniers, tents and sleeping bags, but in this climate even a 2K uphill of a moderate grade is tough, let alone tens of them. The last few kilometers we ride among the shuttle buses transporting resort guests from Tg. Belungkor ferry terminal.

Finally, on our last day of riding we get some tailwind. And it is still not raining. We meet quite a few Singaporeans coming up for their Sunday ride when going to the ferry terminal at Tg. Pengelih. Some of them just say hi, but others wish us a happy new year. Happy New Year!
