Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 7.38 (6904 steps including the cool-off walk home)
Time 41:08
Comments Ave 139. The heart rate stayed mostly between 131 and 139, but in the beginning the receiver was not very responsive and displayed 182. This morning started as a mess. First we were hunting cockroaches in our apartment, and headed late for the run. We missed our regular bus to notice that we can't make it to the next one either. When on the street waving down a taxi, the bus came, 8 minutes late. Frantically running we caught it!

Exercise Run
Course Science Park II - Kent Ridge Park - Science Park I - NUS - West Coast Park
Distance 13.33K (12458 steps)
Time 1:18:58
Comments Ave 141, +26C, partly or mostly cloudy. It's amazing how big a difference just three degrees can make. It wasn't hot at all: nice breeze made it even cool sometimes. This was very relaxing run, even though not that slow. We made a brief stop for drinks at the main library on campus.

It was also our pizza night. This time we made a regular Pizza Margherita. We also visited Holland Village in the afternoon to get a red envelope for our friend's wedding. On top of that we had quite a shopping spree and bought this cool pillow for our guest room.

Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 6.46K (6051 steps)
Time 29:37
Comments Ave 136, max 153, +30, sunny. A short run at noon.

After the run we visit the nearby bicycle shop Passi:one to ask if they carry large mountain bike rims with disc breaks. Unfortunately, they basically focus on building road bikes, even though they have few off-the-shelf mnt bikes available (mostly Cannondale), and a lot of other cool stuff. I walk out of the shop with a new Cateye wireless cyclocomputer.

We have lunch in Paradise Inn at the West Coast Plaza. The place specializes in local favorites. We have double boiled soup and two small dishes of vegetables and rice, and very delicious fruit infused iced teas. Food is ok, not very light, but the chicken feet in our soup were more or less repulsive.

Exercise BodyAttack
Time 45:00
Comments Tei's calves are still hurting from Monday's Pilates, and both of our's thighs and arms from yesterday's BodyPump, but still we offered them another chance to be tortured. This is a high-impact, high pace cardio exercise with a short upper body workout in the middle. Today we did a lot of chest push-ups.

Exercise BodyPump
Comments Tei's calves are still hurting after Monday's Pilates. For some reason this session (program #70?) was particularly tough for shoulders, even as soon as in the warm-up.

Exercise Run
Course Kent Ridge Park
Distance 6.71K (6273 steps)
Time 38:17
Comments Ave 132, max 158. Another torture for calf muscles; we ran to the top of Kent Ridge. Some progress has taken place since the heart rate did not even reach 160.

@ Mon 20/07/2009
Exercise Pilates
Comments A lot of breathing again, which was not very good for Tei's migraine headache. We also did plies and releves standing on one foot and holding the other up against the wall. Great calf exercise!

Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 9.17K (9576 steps)
Time 48:18
Comments Ave 142, max 160, +31C. Late start to the day, so it was quite hot already. Tei ran 1.3 loops around the park, Tomi ran the regular ~7.5K loop.

We have a very lazy afternoon after the run, but finally at 3pm. we get onto our feet and go for a walk. This time we visit Rochester Park, also in the vicinity of our office. This is a small green area with a number of fine restaurants hosted in white colonial houses. Unfortunately, none of the places is open, so we have to return to our own village to enjoy our Sunday beers on Harry's patio. On our way back we pass probably the ugliest condominium buildings in Singapore, and an HDB flat already prepared for the National Day.

@ Sat 18/07/2009
Comments We find another interesting historic neighborhood, and not too far away from our place nor our office. The reason we get there is Colbar Cafe (Col for colonial), a historic eating place located next to an army camp and at the edge of an old colonial neighborhood with large white houses and huge lawns, and a lot of trees. For some reason in our map the area is marked gray as if it were fully developed, but it is all greenery. This is probably the only area in Singapore that still has power lines in the air. Elsewhere they are underground.

At Colbar we have lunch, a chicken sandwich and a mushroom omelette. The cafe also has a decent selection of British beers, which is quite unordinary in Singapore. The food isn't great, somewhat overpriced, but the family restaurant-like athmosphere is nice.

Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 7.68K (7518 steps altogether)
Time 42:23
Comments Ave 131, not too hot this morning. We started really slow. Tomi actually only walked the shorter loop, and Tei ran the whole loop.

@ Mon 13/07/2009
Exercise Pilates
Comments This time we did a lot of breathing exercises.

Exercise Trekking
Course Rifle Range Rd. - MacRitchie Reservoir Park trail
Distance 10-12K
Comments Undecided whether to do household chores such as washing windows or cleaning the oven, we go out for a hike. We take a bus to Bukit Timah, and first have a quick lunch at McDonalds, since we there is nothing else available, or at least that's what we think. On our way to nature reserve we see a pastry shop open ... next time we know. We walk the Rifle Range Rd. to the end. We have never thought there is such a quiet and peaceful place in Singapore as this road; it is hard to imagine that the place is in the middle of a very crowded island.

We continue on Rifle Range Link to Terentang Trail, and further to Macritchie Nature Trail. We follow MacRitchie Reservoir shoreline on Petai Trail. There are few hikers in the first part of the trip, but more and more tourists and families with kids come up as we get closer to MacRitchie reservoir.

Exercise Run
Course Science Park II - Kent Ridge Park - Science Park I - NUS
Distance 9.89K (9235 steps)
Time 54:34
Comments Ave 130, max 150, +28C, drizzling. It seems that our Saturday routine has changed since the BodyPump classes became too crowded.

@ Fri 10/07/2009
Exercise Stretching
Comments The class goes by the name 'Yoga core' but it is more stretching and relaxation, which is just perfect for a Friday afternoon.

@ Tue - Wed 07-08/07/2009
Comments Low crime does not mean no crime --- reminds Singapore government the citizens that there indeed is crime in S'pore. And we evidenced this personally when our German neighbors called us and told that our bicycles, as well as theirs, had been stripped off of all valuable parts, such as wheels, disc brakes, cycle computer, pump and its holder, and bike tool set.

The theft happened between 8 and 10pm. on Monday night, when they were out. We were out, too, but until a bit later. Unlike theirs, our bikes were stored in more secluded place, so we did not notice the theft. I cannot help thinking that it must have been someone who specifically knew that there were four mountain bikes stored at our condo, and the owners were out.

And then to some happier stuff: A friend of mine from Finland visited us for two days from Monday night to Thursday morning on her way down under. I took Tuesday and Wednesday off from work to show her around. We spent quite relaxing time strolling parks: Haw Par Villa, Hortpark, and the Southern Ridges Park Connector from Kent Ridge Park to Mt Faber. On Wednesday we visited the Botanic Gardens.

We also visited Vivocity, country's largest shopping mall, and walked the Orchard Road from end to end. We had drinks in the Long Bar at Raffles Hotel. The weather was favorable, mostly or partly cloudy, and drizzling occassionally, but still quite hot for someone not used to tropical temperatures.

Exercise Bicycling
Course Bollywood
Distance 54.89K (ave 22.1kph, max 38.0kph)
Time 2:28'34
Comments What a nice cloudy day for a bike ride. We visit Bollywood Veggies again for lunch. They serve some awesome Indian curries. We have papaya salad, Warrior chicken curry, and Monsoon veggie curry with white and brown rice, and down these scrumptious dishes with iced lemongrass tea. We take a short walk in the gardens afterwards. It almost feels like we are truly in the countryside, no noise from the traffic, just some insects and birds buzzing loud.

@ Sat 04/07/2009
Exercise Run
Course PP Village, South Buona Vista, Kent Ridge Rd, NUS Campus
Time 47:47
Comments Ave 140, max 158, +29C, partly cloudy. We left early enough to run mostly in shade, since the sun at its peak yet. We also enjoyed some nice breeze. The route is hard, though. The first third is completely flat, the second third is constant uphill, and the final third is rolling hills, up and down. Only in the very end we had some downhill.

@ Thu 02/07/2009
Exercise BodyAttack
Comments This is a new addition to the schedule. The class is only 45 minutes long, but still quite demanding, given that we have to return to the office afterwards and stay awake a few more hours at our desks --- actually, today we may go to listen to a talk on the campus, which is a guaranteed anesthetizer. In the middle of the cardio workout we did some push-ups, both triceps and regular, and they were quite impossible after yesterday's pump.

@ Wed 01/07/2009
Exercise BodyPump
Comments Totally new program again --- I just can't keep track of them anymore. This time we did not even use bar for triceps, just plates or dumbells, and twe did ons of push-ups.
