Park hopping! Today we familiarize ourselves with the park connector network. It is a pedestrian/bicycle path network that connects Singapore's parks together, not all of them in the same network, though. Many of the connectors run along the water canals. However, not all the connectors are connected, as we find when coming down from Bukit Batok. There is no way of crossing the Ayer Rajah Expressway, so we have to walk our bikes across an old railway bridge to access another connector. We start our trip riding to the NTU campus. From there we have a plan to take what looks a nice and peaceful country road on the map, and it is a nice and peaceful road, but after a couple of kilometers it ends at a gate to the army shooting range, O-Oh! We turn back. We continue through a huge cemetery area. Eventually, we end up at Bukit Gombak MRT station, where we have durian ice cream and a couple of mugs of fresh fruit juice for a couple of $$. This is my second encounter with durian and we do not become friends this time either. The first time I had it in a mooncake, which left me quite impressionless. Last highlight of our trip is this amazing park, Bukit Batok Town Park, with a nice pond, Lake Little Guilin (see the cliffs on right), which used to be a granite quarry. Wikipedia tells it is a popular location for wedding pictures. I don't question that. Some notes: my understanding is that 'bukit' means a 'hill' in English. Earlier in our trip we have a Korean 'breakfast' at the Super Bowl Complex, and some delicious kiwi and strawberry juice. I wonder if the name of the place has anything to do with THE Super Bowl, the champioship game in American football. Anyway, the food is good and the service excellent. |
