They are my favorite kind of people."

Comments No running today either. Instead we slept late, and went for another walk even if neither of us was feeling very well. The plan was to walk to Chinese Garden and the neighboring Japanese Garden, but at the time we reached the Pandan Reservoir we realized the gardens are too far away. We turned back, and on our way home explored the West Coast Road and found several interesting food centres and markets.

About the pictures: in the first one you see our master bathroom after the mirror has been taken away for replacement (it had some icorrigible defects), the second one pictures the world's largest container harbor next to the West Coast Park some twenty-minute walk away from our home --- a container "full" of our household goods is somewhere there waiting for customs clearance and delivery. Then there is another picture of the harbor and the fishing boats, and the final one is from Pandan Reservoir: it makes an awesome running route, since the trail around is unpaved and there is a nice "cool" breeze coming from the ocean.

Comments No running yesterday or today. We both have food poisoning, likely from the appetizers we had at Harry's or the dinner we had at Lemongrass a couple of days ago. This morning we saw a doctor. The appointment and the medication for two of us cost us S$70, which is about 30 euros. Not bad, and our insurance will cover at least part of that.

Here is a picture of the building I go to work, Fusionopolis. My employer IHPC inhabits several floors in the building, and we are on the 16th floor in the North tower. There is a three-floor gym with an olympic-size pool on the top. The building is brand new, and so far the gym is the only service in the building: there is supposed to be a food court, several cafeterias, restaurants, a bar, cold storage, bakery, hair dresser, and optics & frames shop. For the time being, we have to take a shuttle to Holland V at the lunchtime, which is not a bad option, since there are zillions of places to eat there.

Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 6.5K 9 (6097 steps)
Time 40:42
Comments Ave 150. Rain radar showed a heavy rain approaching. It was also a cooler morning, only +24C. It was really nice to run, even when the rain came pouring down.

Exercise Run
Course Clementi Woods
Distance 6.66K (6172 steps)
Time 34:43
Comments Ave 132, max 151. We explored another hilly park in our neighborhood.

Exercise Walk
Course Haw Par Villa - The HortPark - Kent Ridge Park
Time >5 hours
Comments First, we visited Haw Par Villa(*), a theme park one (Haw) of the Aw Boon brothers, the developers of Tiger Balm, and the founders of the Tiger Balm dynasty, built to the other one (Par) in 1937. The park depicts different legends and characters of the Chinese folklore. It contains quite a gruesome exhibit "Ten Courts of Hell", which pictures different punishments one gets for different felonies and crimes using very graphic scenes of mini-statues. Most of the punishments include dismembering or cutting the human body into pieces using a variety of tools, such as grinding stones and blades. Do I need to say more?

From the Villa we walked through an expat residential area to The HortPark(*), Singapore's horticultural national park, and from there to Anchor point at the Alexandra Road for lunch. We did some shopping, too. Tei bought her first ever office outlook. On our way back we took the Canopy walk in the Kent Ridge Park. We met some agressive monkeys on the walk.

(*)I should probably mention that both of these attractions are very near to our place; Haw Par Villa is just a 10-minute walk away, and the HortPark within another 10 to 15 minutes.

Exercise Run
Course South Buona Vista - NUH, NUS campus
Distance 7.07K (6554 steps)
Time 47:49
Comments Ave 144, Once again we tried to find a shortcut home from Fusionopolis through campus, but it was not easy. We ended up running (or walking) a lot of stairs up and down.

Exercise Run
Course Science Park II - Kent Ridge Park
Distance 8.65K (8014 steps)
Time 48:08
Comments Ave 136, partly cloudy. Early morning run, and it was +28C already. There is this cool park system in which four parks are connected with tree top bridges so that there is no need to cross busy highways in order to get from one park to another. See the blog about them. Here you have another photo album on the project, and one more.

Exercise Run
Course West Coast Park
Distance 6.84K (6336 steps)
Time 35:57
Comments Ave 134, max 145. This time we ran around the whole park. There were quite a few people jogging and walking; in general 6-7pm (just after the office hours) seems the most popular exercise time here. Soon after that it will be dark.

Comments We have not had much chance for sightseeing yet. Today we took the North-South (red) MRT line around to see some country. First, we took the bus to Jurong East, which is a city in the very west part of Singapore, and then hopped on the train there. The train was surprisingly crowded given that it was Sunday.

The first picture is actually from the NUS campus, and the second one across the street from the bus stop I take the bus to the office at. The brand new building is an apartment complex neighboring ours, and next to it there is a very idyllic old "Chinese" house that is in need of some serious renovation work.

Then you'll have the Jurong East MRT station, Singapore's business center, the Boat Quay by the Singapore river, and some Chinese astrological figures by the river, erected for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Exercise Run
Course National University of Singapore, Science Park II/III
Distance 6K
Time 37:44
Comments Ave 127, +33C, cloudy. We tried to find a comfortable path through the campus towards the Fusionopolis, with no avail. The campus's landscape design seems not too runner friendly with so many trails leading nowhere. However, it is a very beautiful campus.

Course West Coast Park
Distance 6.55K (6068 steps)
Time 30:51
Comments Ave 129, max 147. I got a nasty stomach flu after eating an egg n' salmon muffin at Coffee Bean on Saturday. This was the first easy attemt to get back to exercise routine.

Exercise We do not have keys to the Murano (our apartment complex) gym yet.
Comments We have been in our new home for two days now, and so far it has been quite nice. Since the place is brand new, there are some defects, but no major problems. And best of all, there are only a couple of other families living in the complex, so it is pretty peaceful and quiet, if you did not count the water fountain in the pool and the buses, ... and occassional thunderstorm we have seen in recent days.

Here are finally some pictures from within our apartment, as well as the balcony and the yard of Murano. The first picture is from our very first day here in Singapore, and the very first downpour we experienced, viewed from the patio of an Irish pub.

Ther curtains are provided by the landlord: for some reason blackouts are very important here even if the daylight extends only from 7am. to 7pm. Note the lamp on the balcony (also courtesy of the landlord): it creates some awesome impressions to the balcony when dark.

We have a security guard, althought the guy has not taken his position yet. In order to get in, we have a remote control for the main gate, and the pin for the walk-in gate. However, it took us some time to figure out how to get out of the complex.

Exercise Run
Course SPE Stadium
Distance 1x800m, 3x400m
Time 10:09 (20:56)
Comments An attempt to revert to our speed training program; it was tougher than we expected. We ran 800 meters in 4:15, and then the 400's in 1:58. On top of that it took us 14 minutes (2.8K) to reach the stadium, and a lot more to return to the hotel, since we got lost. Overall we ran about 10K and an hour.

Exercise Run
Course Botanical garden
Distance 8.26K (7649 steps)
Time 42:56

Exercise Run
Course Orchard Parade Hotel gym
Time 30:00
Comments Ave 144, max 163. We did another "stair" exercise by increasing the speed from 8, 9, 10, 11 to 12/11.5km/h every five minutes, and then cooling down quickly. I have to admit that this kind of easily accesible gym is luxury after a long work day, and I am supposed to work long days here, from 8:30AM to 6PM. I am looking forward to our move to the new apartment complex this coming Saturday; we signed the lease today.
