Comments Ave 144, +2C. cloudy. No snow on the ground, but sleet started falling when I left for the run. The trail to the park is still very icy. I just made one 3K loop --- I am looking forward to nicer weather, but I am not holding my breath. As usual, Tomi played soccer in the morning. By the way, I need to make an appointment to sports massage. My right calf is cranky and stretching is just not enough.

Comments Someone accidentally took my hard shoes after the first class, so I had to do Blackbird in soft shoes. The hard shoe reel in the first class did not go quite well: I was constantly on the wrong foot. The soft shoe reel instead went relatively well.

Comments The same programs as last week. Still, in the core session I had a hard time holding my planks up. Whoever designed the women's locker rooms had no idea how much space a single individual takes when changing. The rooms are packed, and we have to line up for showers. (and then there is not enough hot water, as it happened on Monday)

Comments Ave 140, +3C, partly cloudy or partly sunny :-) We headed South, so sunglasses would have been nice. Seurasaari is an open-air museum district in the middle of Helsinki that displays old way of living in Finland and features several old buildings brought from all around the country.

This was the second long run of our marathon training program: we successfully endured 15 minutes longer than last time.

Comments Two regular classes with Terhi. In advanced level we did reel in both soft and hard shoes. In intermediate class we practised Blackbird, a traditional set dance (to hornpipe), in hard shoes. Now I feel like I am approaching the level of the classes and am not miserably behind all the time.

Comments Ave 144, +3C, gusty wind. What a lousy winter we have. It is gray and gloomy. It must be because of the global warming! Some of the trails were still icy even if it has been above zero degrees celsius for a long time. As usual, Tomi playes indoor soccer early in the morning. Probably I should opt for indoor running as well, but there are no TV's in the student sports center!

Comments We showed our support to Finnish cross-country skiing and attended the first day of the national championships in men's and women's sprint. The weather was terrible. Last time we've suffered from such a miserable conditions was in Columbus, OH, when wathing IU play the college cup in mens' soccer. I guess the year was 2003. However, it was much colder then. Here it was only rainy and windy.

Next to us was a classful of grade school girls that kept the spirit up by rooting to every single skier. Probably, they were on the class trip.

Comments Ave 136, -4C, sunny, windy. Recently we have had some beautiful sunny days and clear skies. However, it is going to change in few hours; there is some snow on its way. We continued our marathon training program with this easy-paced 1.5 hours-long run. The plan is to run a longer (timewise) run every other week and prolong each by 20 minutes from the previous.

By the way, we noticed that the loop in nearby park we thought is 3K long is actually only 2930 meters (they have posted a new sign). I am not going to revise the previous blog entries because of this.

Comments It's been a month since I have attended the dance class. Fortunately, we started totally new routines this time, so finally I could catch up. In the advanced level we started with soft shoe reel, and then rehearsed the treble jig from the previous semester. In the intermediate level class we spent the whole class in hard shoes and worked on a heavy reel. Heavy reel? I've never heard the term before, but it was basically just variations of regular treble rolls (treble hop backs) done in very fast tempo.

Comments Ave 137, max 152, -4C, sunny. Nice and easy run in the beautiful sunshine, although the sun stays pretty low even in the middle of the day.

Today we found out that the course of Stockholm marathon has been sold out already in Mid December. We need to start looking for another races. Such could be Paavo Nurmi Marathon in Turku at the end of June. This event is named after the most famous Finnish long distance runner, "The Flying Finn", who was decorated with nine gold and three silver Olympic medals in distances between 1500 and 10K meters between 1920 and 1928. Another option would be Midnight Sun Marathon in Northern Norway on Mid Summer night.
