Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 48:48
Comments Ave 155, +13C, mostly cloudy. We ran the first 3K loop in 16 minutes, and I made the second one in 16:30. Tomi took a bit easier and jogged it in 19:00. It is actually advantageous for running to have a few days' breaks now and then.

@ Wed 28/08/2008
Comments Home at last. We fix a nice dinner for us and have some good wine.

@ Mon 26/08/2007
Comments On our way home we visit the gardens of an old castle in Mustio. Mustion linna ('Mustio castle' in English; Swedish name for 'Mustio' means black river) is exceptional since it is a wooden as opposed to stone or brick as most other old castles in Finland. This is the place we did not quite make it in our last weekend bicycle ride.

We have a nice late lunch at the restaurant.

Exercise Run
Course Downtown Naantali
Time 42:47
Comments This weekend we visit two small coastal towns in South-western Finland. We spend the first night in Naantali, which is home of Moomin World, and our president's Summer residence.

We spend a night in a small cabin at the campground that is located less than a kilometer away from downtown on Kuparivuori ('Copper mountain' in English). It is not really a mountain but makes quite a tedious hike, and run!

It is nice and cool early in the morning when we head out for a run. Not too many people are out yet, just a couple of Nordic walkers. Did you know that Nordic walking has its 10th anniversary this weekend?

Rest of the Sunday we spend in Uusikaupunki, and an event that exhibits renovation of old wooden houses. Households and families that have done exceptional job in refurbishing an old, at best a 150 years old, building opened their homes and gardens for visitors. More than 60 private households participated in the event.

Exercise Irish dance
Time 60:00
Comments Quite a different approach to Irish dance compared to Mimi's classes in Bloomington. We started straight away without warm-up across the floor with spring-two-threes, and some side steps. I could not quite keep up. Then we switched to hard shoes, and practised a short routine, which was fun and much easier for me. The fiberclass toes of both shoes dropped off. So, after the class I visited shoemaker.

Exercise Run
Distance 7.5K
Comments Tomi run to town to pick up the rental car for our weekend trip.

@ Thu 23/08/2007
Exercise Run
Course Paloheinä
Distance 10K
Time 55:22
Comments Ave 142, max 154, +20C, sunny. I forced myself to run the whole distance: the beginning was again unnecessarily hard (not really hard, but somewhat harder than usual with that pace), but after the halfway running got easier and easier.

Exercise Run (Tei)
Course Pirkkola
Distance 5K
Time 29:18
Comments Ave 143, max 155, +22C, sunny. Heavy feet. I ran one 3K loop in little more than 18 minutes, and that was quite enough.

Exercise Run (Tomi)
Course Paloheinä
Distance 10K
Time 58:04
Comments +22C, sunny. First 1.2 km at 6:40 pace, then 3.9 km at 6:24 pace, 3.4 km at 5:40 pace, and cooldown for 0.9 km at 6:01 pace.

Exercise Bicycling
Course Around Lohjanjärvi
Distance 93K
Comments Our nice weekend bicycle tour ends prematurely when my tube bursts just after seven kilometer ride on Sunday morning. The hole is at the base of the valve, so it is a tough thing to fix. We spend two hours trying but eventually fail; the tube does not hold air a bit. We end up walking about 12 kilometers to the next town, where we catch a bus to Helsinki. I will post some pictures and stories later.

@ Fri 17/08/2007
Exercise Run (Tei)
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 46:48
Comments Ave 146, max 161, +22C, sunny, windy. Cheese, this week flew by. I ran two 3K loops in 17:04 and 16:45, and felt really good.

Exercise Run (Tomi)
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Comments Tomi bested me by some tens of seconds. He ran two loops in 16:27 and 16:12. The conditions were quite the same.

@ Tue 14/08/2007
Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 49:57
Comments Ave, 138, max 153, +22C, partly cloudy. Nice and easy run. New 100 meter markers have got some paint on them.

@ Mon 13/08/2007
Exercise Run
Course Haaga
Time 15:00
Comments +23C, sunny, mild and not humid at all. We run to the bike shop to pick up our bicycles we left there for tune-up before our trip. The shop ended up doing nothing to our bikes; they say buying new parts to the bikes would be much more expensive than getting new bikes. I guess it is about the time to buy new bikes, anyway.

@ Thu 09/08/2007
Exercise Run
Course Indiana University research and teaching preserve by Griffy Lake
Time 50:00
Comments This time we go running to the woods thinking it would be cooler below the canopy. Cooler it is, since the sun does not reach us, but on the other hand, there is no breeze down in the ravines. We take the trail around the University Lake, which is practically drained; it has not rained much around Bloomington this Summer. We see another runner and a couple of hikers, and some guys driving around the golf courses in their carts, and a lot of bugs and butterflies.

@ Wed 08/08/2007
Exercise Run
Course Bloomington, Ind.
Distance 5-6K
Time 30:07 (+some 20 minutes)
Comments Ave 133, max 145, very hot and humid. We run the traditional trail route to Tapp Rd. After 30 minutes of running we switch to jogging and walking. The weather definitely is unsuitable for any kind of physical exercise outdoors. It is supposed to be over 100 degrees (F) this afternoon.

@ Sun 05/08/2007
Exercise Run
Course Western Kentucky University campus, Bowling green, KY
Time 40:36
Comments Ave 127, max 152, +30C, muggy. The town is quiet and so is the campus. The latter is located on a hill, so the run is not that easy. Besides, the extreme heat and humidity take their toll, too. Fortunately, recently we have been smart enough to stock the car with drinks and towels to refreshen ourselves immediately after the run, and to protect the seats.

@ Fri 03/08/2007
Exercise Run
Course Opryland, Nashville, TN
Time 39:32
Comments Ave 137, +27C, muggy. We are staying for CogSci conference at one of potentially most depressing places on earth, namely the Opryland resort in Nashville, Tenn. It is like a city within walls and under a roof. It is also like prison, since there is nothing around it but chain motels and restaurants, and a huge mall. Furthermore, there are people that come to this kind of a place voluntarily and pay for it. The Gaylord Opryland hotel is very expensive; all our evening meals cost us two about hundred dollars. I bet for that money we would get grandieuse dinners in several places in Bloomingon, Ind., but Opryland food is just mediocre.

So, running options are not that great either. Fortunately, there is a quiet country road nearby that is runnable. We take that forth and back for about 40 minutes.

@ Wed 1/8/2007
Exercise Run
Course People park, Columbus, IN
Time 28:12
Comments Ave 127, max 138. Another hot and humid run to pick up the car from downtown - this time in Columbus, Indiana. The park is peaceful and cooler than the streets. The sun is just getting up, and its orange-yellowish light colors the lower trunks and branches of the trees beautifully. Also he open areas are covered by fog --- I should have taken the camera.
