Exercise Run
Course Yasso 800 (Pirkkola track)
Distance 4 x 800m
Time 16:33 (gross 27:22)
Comments Ave 140, max 154, +16C, sunny. Although the temperature was not high, the track was pretty warm, since there is no shelter from sun. After several days of rain, the air is relatively humid, too. We jogged to the track and walked back. That give us an extra 30 minutes of exercise.

Exercise Bicycling
Course Suvisaaristo (Summer Islands)
Distance 56.22K
Time 3:56:24
Comments +18C, partly cloudy. Today we took another direction and headed towards the sea. Starting from Westend, an upperclass district in the city of Espoo, the western neighbor of Helsinki, we rode west on a recreational trail that follows the shoreline for tens of kilometers. We visited a couple of nice cafeterias for coffee, sandwiches and ice cream. We also passed some extravagant new homes by the seaside --- so there must be some people in this country besides Formula 1 and NHL stars that have A LOT of money.

Eventually we hit the nice rolling hills of Suvisaari, a collection of islands belonging to Espoo. The road was in excellant condition and the traffic consisted mostly of bicyclists. The scenery was the usual one sees in this country both by the sea and inland by lakes: broken shoreline with a lot of tiny islands, small sheltered bays, sandy beaches and cliffs, willow dominating the vegetation. The weather favored us as well. Despite some darkish clouds lurking around the corner, the sky above us stayed mostly blue and we got abundant sunshine. It was a great setting for Midsummer.

Exercise Bicycling
Course Nuuksio
Distance 74.65K
Time 5:21:18
Comments +18C, sunny, mild breeze. We rode to Nuuksio National Park. We followed the national bicycle touring route for a number of kilometers. Whoever drew that route had a weird sense of humor. I bet if we had had any load on our bicycles a few curse words would have been flying around. The trail had some really steep ups and downs with lots of loose and rocky gravel. Even walking the bike was a feat.

We stopped at Nuuksio school for a quick lunch, pasta salad and banana, and later at the National Park Guide Hut for a coffee. The guide herself was really friendly and helpful, and probably bored, too, despite thee park being pretty crowded. The park has good trail maps and a lot of signposts, so it is hard to get lost.

Our final stop was at Salmi campground. We had traditional Finnish macaroni and sausage casserole at the cafeteria.

We have a wild fire warning covering most of western and mid-section of the country, but surprisingly not the park even if it is really dry everywhere. We don't have the same system as in the States where the forest fire danger rating system tells if the danger is low, moderate, high, very high, or extreme, but here the warning is either on or off.

Comments Finally, we finished painting the balcony and potted some flowers and herbs. Check back the pictures of the old balcony: here and here.

Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 48:41
Comments Ave 134, max 152, +18C, partly cloudy, somewhat humid. We ran two 3K loops in 6min/km pace.

Later in the afternoon we visited the Rhododendron park nearby with my mom who's staying with us for a few days. The best blossom had passed already, but there were still some nice hues of orange and pink left. And some tiny tiny squirrels.

Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 50:29
Comments Ave 135, max 148, +13C. It's a cooler day and we're back to running! I'm not absolutely sure whether this was a good idea, though. The foot is still swollen and sore to touch, but running did not hurt it more, but the bruise is now all over the ankle.

@ Mon 11/06/2007
Exercise Pilates
Time 60:00
Comments A lots of planks and breathing exercises.

@ Fri 08/06/2007
Comments I twisted my ankle on Wednesday night after the EuroCup qualifier, which we won against Belgium. This time I was a bit lucky; no torn ligament, no broken bones, just enormous swelling and excruciating pain. And of course no running for a couple of weeks.

@ Wed 06/06/2007
Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 5K
Time 30:33
Comments Ave 143, +25C, sunny. Despite the nice breeze it is getting too hot to run in the middle of the day. I ran just one loop in about seventeen minutes or little less.

@ Tue 05/06/2007
Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 48:49

Exercise Bicycling
Course Sipoo
Distance 71.56K
Time 5:00:00
Comments +18C, sunny. The intrepid explorers hit roads less travelled again. Not that muddy this time but almost as rocky as the river bed we once conquered in Colorado.

@ Sat 02/06/2007
Exercise Run
Course Yasso 800
Distance 4 x 800m
Time 16:09 (25:23)
Comments Ave 137, max 154, +17C, sunny. We were more conservative with the speed than last time and kept the pace in 30-32s/100m. The original plan was to run six times 800 meters, but lacking in energy, we cut the exercise short.
