Exercise Bicycling
Course Keimola
Distance 28.95
Time 2:42:14
Comments +12C and sunny. We officially opened the bicycle season by making a bold decision to choose a route less travelled. No wonder --- it is not really a mountain bike season here yet. Trails are pretty muddy or icy, or both. No worry, we've hauled our bikes through snow before. If anything good can be found in this, at least the trail was not dusty. Fine sand and dust is a terrible problem here in the city.

Last year we rode only 497.94K. Obviously, my defense and the grande moving project took its toll of the riding time. Besides we did not really have a proper biking vacation.

Comments Our kitchen story is almost over(*). See the before and after pictures on the right. Note, how the daylight makes wonders in our new kitchen: the "gray" picture is taken around noon, whereas the "blue" picture is taken at 3 pm.

(*) This reminds me of a delightful Swedish-Norvegian movie named "Kitchen stories"(Swedish name "Psalmer fran köket") We rented in Bloomington. It's one of the funniest movies I've seen.

Exercise Run (Tomi played indoor soccer earlier today)
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 46:54
Comments Ave 150, max 164, +12C, sunny. I ran two 3K loops in 16:35 and 16:45. We are pampered with another gorgeous week of mild temperatures and constant sunshine.

Exercise Strength
Time 60:00
Comments We had a substitute leader today, and a much more interesting session than usual. We did a lot different and shorter series with all the muscle groups.

@ Sun 25/03/2007
Exercise Run
Course Kannelmäki, Malminkartano
Time 54:35
Comments Ave 134, max 149, +10C, sunny. We were planinng for a longer run, but the late start and roaring hunger resulted in early retirement, only to find that the only neighborhood grocery store open on Sundays had a closing sale --- everything but beer, cigarettes and magazine had to go with 50% discount.

We are slowly cleaning up the new kitchen and filling the cabinets. Check back soon for new pictures!

Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 5K
Time 31:53
Comments Ave 147, +8C, sunny. We just made one fast 3K lap in 15:40, and lightly jogged for warm-up and recovery.

@ Fri 23/03/2007
Comments Assembly is finally over, or at least that's what we thought. There is still some details to work out. There are two major setbacks we notices only after starting to clean up: the gorgeous corner sink is badly scratched, and the hood quit working after the second trial.

I am very pleased with the lights: I can actually see what I am fixing. I guess everything else is going to be ok as well: the guy, Sakari, who did most of the work --- besides the electrician (very efficient) and the plumber (cursed a lot) --- is cooperative sort of a guy, even if I do not agree with all his sentiment.

The pictures on the right are taken just after the assembly is finished, before the stylizing :-)

@ Wed 21/03/2007
Comments Tiling is finished and the last cabinets, the ones with the glass doors, were installed. The dishwasher also found its place. If you wonder what the ghost in the lower picture is, it is our new steel fridge-freezer combo wrapped in protective plastic.

The nightly vacuuming is pain in the a**, but soon it is over (hopefully).

Exercise Strength
Time 60:00
Comments My legs are like spaghetti even if I did not use the heaviest weights. I could notice some progress with the shoulders and triceps in spite of some breaks in the workout program. If we only could get the kitchen done and be back to normal ...

The cabinets are in place as of 03/20, and the walls have seen some paint, too. There is a terrible mess all over: everything is covered with fine dust.

Exercise Run
Course Pitäjänmäki
Distance 6.5K
Time 33:53
Comments Ave 137, +2C, sunny. It is election day, but not too many souls were up and heading to vote this gorgeous Sunday morning. We just had a short and easy run in the neighborhood.

No news about the kitchen, yet. We still live among the cabinets stacked in the middle of the living room, and practically have no space to move around. The kitchen walls are not painted yet, either.

Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 51:42
Comments Ave 137, +7C, sunny. The trails are clear, a little soft and muddy, though, but no ice and slush. In the very end of the run we tried to make a shortcut on our regular route back home, and hit some very slick ice. So, we got some core exercise as well.

@ Mon 12/03/2007
Comments Our new kitchen has arrived. Early bird! We also have a new cork floor installed. Thanks to Timo, Tomi's father.

We are still waiting for guys to come and install the cabinets and appliences, and do the plummming and electricity. Anyway, we enjoyed our first dinner in the new "kitchen".

@ Sun 11/03/2007
Exercise Run
Course Munkkiniemi - Taka-Töölö
Distance 18K
Time 1:48:38
Comments Ave 138, +2C, very sunny. We ran mostly on streets since they are drier than trails; that is, no ice and no slush. However, asphalt wet from melting snow and long-hanging bright-shining sun is terrible to the eyes. Next time: sunglasses!

Tomi and his father Timo had plenty of exercise yesterday while taking the old kitchen down, and removing the floor and the tiles; especially the latter was harder than expected.

Exercise Indoor soccer (Tomi)
Time 60:00
Comments At least one of us is occassionally working out these days ... Anyway, our kitchen is taking its last breaths. Here are some pictures before we take it down and the new one is carried in (hopefully on Monday).

@ Sun 05/03/2007
Comments We took two days off and visitied Turku, the oldest town in Finland and also its former capital. My friend Marion took us to the largest restaurant brewery in Finland, Panimoravintola Koulu, Koulu (School) for short. The building is a former school, and the pub is decorated with paraphernalia from those days.

On Monday we went to a mini cruise from Turku to Stockholm. There's practically nothing to do onboard besides drinking. We refrained until early afternoon's wine tasting. Thereafter we spent some time in a infrared sauna. It was supposed make us feel really good, but I did not notice anything special, but the sauna was dry and not as warm as an ordinary sauna, and of course there was nowhere to throw the water to.

Viking Line has a California theme running through March and April, which is celebrated with an eclectic menu and a cheesy broadway show. Rather than watching the show that has nothing to do with California but sun --- the show culminates in "Let the sun shine in" --- we listened to a duo from the Garden state presenting all-american country and folk music in the sports bar. The guys were somewhat puzzled when we asked them to play something from Jimmy Buffet. They kind of knew one song, Margaritaville.

Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 49:21
Comments Ave 148, -0.8C, cloudy. Now we have more soft snow on the trail, and it is even harder to run. I ran two 3K laps in 17:30 and 16:50. Tomi bonked after the first lap and took the rest easy.
