Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola track
Distance 800 + 2*400 + 4*200
Time 11:XX (26:XX)
Comments We did some fast intervals on the true 400 meter track among other schoolchildren. The track surface is nice to run, although detrimental to my mostly white running shoes.

Exercise Run

Time 57:22 (32:09 on top of the hill)
Comments Ave 141, max 162, +17C, sunny. Early morning run.

Exercise Run
Course Central park
Distance 10K
Time 57:37
Comments Ave 142, max 162, +22C. We chose a good time to run since about 15 minutes after we were back the particles from the Russian wildfires fogged all city.

We were bold and ran to the top of the Paloheina maki, which is used for downhill skiing in winter time. The total ascent is 40 meters (131 feet). I think the grade is close to 14%. It certainly caused some huffin and puffin.

Exercise Bicycling
Course Keskuspuisto (Central park)
Distance 13K
Time 52:00
Comments +22, sunny. A lot of traffic in the park this early evening; mostly nordic walkers, runners and bikers. Fortunately, there are a lot of trails that are well hidden from each other.

Comments What a busy week! Today we got to the workplace for the first time. So, what are the major shocks so far?
  • Doors open to wrong direction.
  • I don't have to spell my name.
  • Toilet is always flushed on the top, not on the side.
  • Organic food is imported from China, local food is packed in plastic --- how ecological!
  • It is hard to get a check in the restaurant, let alone another drink.
  • A normal coffee cup size is 10oz.
  • Bums and drunkards are all around.
  • People smoke everywhere.
  • Beer is sold out on Sundays ;-)
  • I have to weigh produce in supermarket myself. I also have to pack my groceries myself. Plastic and paper bags cost 20 cents or so.
  • It is possible to buy stuff in small quantities.
  • People ride single-speed bicycles with an upward posture, which makes them really struggle even on flat road.
While the major non-shocks are:
  • Driver DO stop for pedestrians, at least some of them.
  • Neighbors say hello.
Stay tuned!

Exercise Run
Course Pirkkola
Distance 8K
Time 46:56
Comments Ave 144, max 159, +18C and partly sunny. New era in our sport blog just began! We did an easy two-loop jog in nearby park, which has some suprising hills. There were a lot of people running and nordic walking; no one smiled or said hello to us :-(

Comments We are in Helsinki! The flights went smoothly, security did not pose any major problems.

Yesterday, on Sunday we drove in my brother's Mercury to pick up the stuff I left behind seven years ago. It was mostly books and artwork --- paintings, drawings, ceramics, graphics, some sculpture and experimental, and a lot of photographs.

Today we picked up the load we shipped from Bloomington. It was here already on Thursday, when we were still in Indy enjoying our last sips of Indiana beers.

So, what did we do in between moving out from Bloomington and flying out of Indy? On Wednesday we drove to Columbus, Ind., to check the Columbus Bar that is under a new and young entrepreneurship. The place looks great and seems to have a lot of potential. I wish our Bloomingotn friends, right you there reading this blog, visit them soon and show your support for Indiana beer.

On Saturday we got our last blast of Indiana thunderstorms while driving to Indy. We checked Eteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art, and Indianapolis Children Museum.

Pictures forthcoming.

Exercise Run
Course People Trails, Columbus, IN
Time 50:00
Comments Sunny and warm, but nice. We ran despite Tomi's hurt back and Tei's migraine nausea and upset stomach.

Exercise Bicycling
Course 446-46
Distance 32.23K
Time 2:03:09
Comments We had an early morning bike ride --- our last in Bloomington. At the halfway we stopped for breakfast at the Cabin Restaurant and Lounge, a combination of a gift store and a diner. If something is uniquely American it is the diners. I even have a food magazine that tells me how to cook diner meals myself.

One should start collecting the diners, and visit every single one as long as they exist. I could bet that sooner or later they will be gone and replaced by 'European-style bistros'.

Exercise Core/strength
Time 45:00
Comments It is about these days we can start saying "this is the last time (ever) that X". Today was the last time we attended Alison's core/stretch session. We started with lunges and squats with the ball and continued with weight training (shoulders, biceps and triceps), planks and push-ups, all on the ball.

Exercise Run
Course To RTT
Distance 7K
Time 43:15
Comments Ave 141, max 159, +25C, sunny and humid. Another horrible run as the heat index tops +30C. I wish no one ever needs to run a marathon in this weather. It would be irresponsible.
