TnT's Workout Blog

"Are you guys runners? You look like runners.
They are my favorite kind of people."

Exercise Strength (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments We used only weights to torture all possible muscles in our body. The heat and humidity were taking their toll as well. Our matts were really nasty afterwards.

@ Sun 30/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course To RTT
Distance 7.5K
Time 43:37
Comments Ave 141, max 158, cloudy, hot and humid. Practically unbearable weather to run. We were sweating profusely an hour after the run.

Exercise Strength (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments This was Christy's last strength session; she is moving to Florida to go to physical therapy school. We did all her favorite workouts using the ball and two sets of weights. Sadly, the class was really under-crowded.

Christy was our favorite leader, not just because of the quote above, but she paid a lot of attention to posture so that we will have an effective workout without hurting ourselves.

@ Mon 24/07/2006
Comments Eventually, it is time to leave New England and go back home in Indiana. Tomi finally gets his lobster at Leagal Sea Foods in Boston's Logan International airport (what a name for a place!).

I finish this journey with some cow pictures.

@ Sat 22/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course Portland, Maine
Distance 6.5K
Time 38:55
Comments Ave 138, max 152, cloudy. We run to the city center to pick up the car we left there the previous night. The scenery is not nice; we mainly jog on the curb of a big highway. Fortunately there is not much traffic.

The major attraction of the day is Mt Washington located in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. It stands up to 6288 feet above the sea level, and is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States.

Unfortunately, Mt Washington is covered by thick fog and bombarded with hefty rain, let alone it is really chilly up there. Considering the circumstances, we do not spend much time admiring the scenery.

We spend the night in the nice town called Littleton. We have dinner at Italian Oasis and Brewery, and later visit a newly opened wine bar.

@ Fri 21/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course Rockport, Massachusetts
Time 48:17
Comments Ave 131, +20C, humid and foggy. We have a scenic early morning run in this beautiful and quiet coastal town. The Atlantic shows some signs of the hurricane Beryl.

Highway 1A north is occassionally pretty jammed. We drive all way to Portland, Maine to find out that the city is full, according to the Tourist Information, of parents visiting their kids on the Summer camp. I guess that was a hoax. If the city were full of parents and kids, one would probably notice that, but the crowd we see is something totally different. The info also gets us to think there is something suspicious about the hotels and motels in general.

However, Portland turns out to be a pretty standard American tourist city with two microbreweries; one with good food and excellant brews, the other one with not that outstanding beer.

@ Thu 20/07/2006
Comments Finally, it is time to leave Boston and see more New England. That's not easy because of tunnel closings and heavy traffic. The airport detour is drawn strangely through the city.

While drivers are nice to pedestrians in Boston and elsewhere in New England, --- it is state law in many places --- there is something weird in driving rules. They do not have as many stop signs as in Midwest, and it is not clear who has the right-of-way. Sometimes it looked like no one has. Another issue that contantly confuses us is that in urban areas turns are marked after the turn, not before. Consequently, we miss several of them.

@ Tue 18/07/2006
Exercise Carcio-conditioning
Time 45:00
Course Seaport Hotel, Boston
Comments We try our hotel's group exercise. For $15 a piece we get workout worth every penny. The session combines regular weight training with dumbbells (squats, biceps, triceps, shoulders) with cardio-workout: jumping jacks, jumprope, running, stepping, jumping squats and running planks. Between each cardio session we do three sets of ten repetitions with weights.

@ Mon 17/07/2006
Comments Our day off. We wash some clothes in a small coin laundry located in Italian district. While awaiting the dryers to finish, we read about the first Finnish bible translation in an Italian version of the Jehovah's witnesses' Awake!

The rest of the day, until the AAAI-2006 conference reception, we spend in China town, Boston Commons --- the oldest public park in the US, and Beacon Hill, a neighborhood that takes (non)parking seriously.

@ Sun 16/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course Charles River, Boston
Time 29:11
Comments Ave 134, Max 170, sunny and muggy. We run the nice and flat route by Charles River. I have never seen so many runners elsewhere as I have seen here in Boston and especially on the banks of Charles River.

The first brewery we visit in Boston, and the only one we made notes of, is Boston Beer Works. Comments forthcoming ...

@ Sat 15/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course Fenway, Boston, MA
Time 31:20
Comments Ave 134, max 142, +22, sunny. We found a secluded park to run nearby our hostel.

By the time we get to the MIT campus it is steaming hot already. I just wonder how much CITGO payed for having this ugly display posted!!??? (see the picture on right)

@ Fri 14/07/2006
Comments After my defense on Thursday, we fly to Boston where Tomi has a poster presentation in the UAI-2006 conference.

@ Thu 13/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course CEM2
Distance 3.4K
Time ~20:00
Comments +22C, humid. Easy run.

@ Wed 12/07/2006
Exercise Strength (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments We had a real nice exercise today; we started with squats holding the ball between our backs and the wall. We continued with crunches and moved on to balancing on the ball while doing biceps, triceps and shoulders. Back and glutes were taken care of as well. We finished with push-ups and planks.

I finally got my new heart-rate monitor. today. I was able to enter all the basic settings without checking the user manual.

@ Tue 11/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 10K
Time 59:42
Comments +23, cloudy, humid. "Very hard". I guess that says it all. Tomi ran alone since it was my turn to participate in the study. The McDonald's breakfast was a heart-stopping experience. I felt jet-lagged for the next few hours I was allowed to have no coffee. Supersize me!

Our evening meal consisted of tomato salad and ceviche.

@ Sun 09/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 10K
Time 58:58
Comments +19C, cloudy and rainy. I ran alone, and Tomi took some pictures. He is going to participate in the study tomorrow morning that explores the effect one high-fat meal has on performance level of athletes, moderately active and sedentery people. This means no meals for eight hours and no strenuous physical activity for 24 hours before the onset of the experiment. I'll participate on Tuesday, so tomorrow is my inactivity day.

Despite the relatively good pace, the run was not strenuous at all. I guess the average heart rate stayed below 150.

@ Sat 08/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course Woodlawn
Distance 3.8K
Time 10:00 (effective time)
Comments +24C, sunny. We ran some speed intervals with equal-distance recovery periods in between: 1*640m, 2*320m, and 3*200m. The distances are approximate. The corresponding times are 3:23, 1:43, and 1:09.

@ Thu 06/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course Wapehani
Time 50:15
Comments Cool! It was only +15C at 7am. However, it was closer to 8:30am. when we got out and onto our bikes, and headed to Wapehani. It was a real luxury run, since the trails were not muddy at all, and the humidity was as low as 53%.

We rode the Clear Creek and Rails to Trails back. Surprisingly, they were pretty crowded this nice, sunny morning.

@ Wed 05/07/2006
Exercise Strength (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments Again, we started with lots of lunges on bench using weights to add extra challenge. We also used them to (s)train arms while doing leg-work. By the time we got to abs my legs were so tired I could barely hold them up.

@ Tue 04/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course RTT+CCT
Distance 16K
Time 1:49:25
Comments +22.5C, cloudy, humid. My heart rate monitor does not stand this humidity, it is all fogged out. I guess that the average heart rate of 135-138 is pretty accurate.

Because of thunderstorm lurking in vicinity we opted for trail instead of taking our bikes out and riding to Griffy to run. Few sprinkles accompanied us when when we started but it soon dried up. The sun came out when we were back home.

We saw a mama deer with a baby crossing the trail, and I almost stepped on a rabbit.

@ Sun 02/07/2006
Comments We went to the Formula 1 Grand Prix that could have been the last one on the American grounds in Ecclestone's era.

The last year's tire farce did not repeat itself this time, but one third of the cars were out of the race after the first turn. Consequently, the rest of the race was pretty uneventful.

The spirits in the stands were high despite the steaming hot day and the early retirement of so many drivers. I could even say Fosters tasted good, at least the first half of the can. Thereafter it was steaming hot like the air.

And who won the race? Michael Schumacher of Ferrari took his fifth win in Indianapolis. Nine cars made it to the end, Finnish-German Nico Rosberg being the only one left without points.

@ Sun 02/07/2006
Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 10K
Time 1:04:30
Comments Ave 144, +22C, sunny, humid. Projected easy-pace run before leaving to US Grand Prix turned out to be a relatively good-pace run. The heat and humidity certainly had their toll. We are going to sweat for hours.

Roaches, like one on the right, are common visitors in our premises.
