Exercise Core/stretch (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments It is even warmer today. We ran to HPER for this effective session. As usual, we started with bouncing on the ball, doing some crunches, "supermans" and planks (on the ball). We did some balancing w/ eyes open and closed. The last ten minutes we spent stretching, relaxing and concentrating in the breathing techniques.

Exercise Bicycling
Course Boltinghouse
Distance 27.55K
Time 1:27:12
Comments Summer is here! It was something like +19C at 2pm. We were not the only ones that considered this sunny and warm afternoon total waste of time in the office. Cascades park was full of people playing volleyball, throwing Frisbee or baseballs, or just lounging on the lawn.

We had a considerable head wind whatever direction we rode, but it did not matter --- it felt so good to be on the road again. I was fairly surprised, though, that there is not as much green and flowers in the countryside yet, as there is in town or in our yard. Of course, the tree species are quite different. There was some sand on the road, especially in THE Boltinghouse hill, which we came down slo-o-o-w-l-y today. We saw a few roadkills, too. And bugs are not out yet. I expect to do a lot more riding once our running races are over.

Bummer! I just snipped the mounting bracket of the cyclocomputer. I guess it is about the time to get a new computer anyway --- a wireless one, and new helmets. Ours have seen way too much sunlight in the past years.

Exercise Strength
Time 45:00
Comments We started with balancing and squatting with weights. We trained triceps, back and chest quite a bit with weights and resistance band. We also worked on glutes and inner and outer thigh muscles --- those that are used a lot in Irish step dance to get that perfect leg turnout.

Exercise Irish step
Time 1:30:00
Comments We learned a new lead-around to the slipjig, and then a new reel step for hard-shoe.

Despite some shortcomings the new studio is quite nice; we have much more room than in the previous place, and abundance of daylight; the building is an old church, and it has large windows facing South and North. The location sucks, and the floor (still); they just moved the old taped-all-over dance mat from the old place and put it over the wooden floor in the church. I guess it is better than having the mat on concrete, though.

Exercise Strength
Time 45:00
Comments We concentrated mainly in shoulders, chest and back using light and heavy weights. That was good, since after last week's squats our thighs were burning for several days. Today we also did some one-leg and two-leg squats with our back against the wall and the ball in between. So, we'll probably feel that, too. We ended the session doing push-ups and planks on mat, and some abs on ball.

Exercise CardioCore
Time 60:00
Comments We had a fast tempo workout consisting of different step sequences (on the floor, though): step touch, grapevine, V's, shuffles, and jumping jacks. The new thing was chasses, tiny fast gallops borrowed from ballet.

In the core section we spent a lot of time on ball doing various abdominal crunches.

Exercise Run
Course RTT + Clear Creek Trail
Distance 21K
Time 2:14:50
Comments Ave 137, +4-7.5C, sunny/partly cloudy. This was the last long run before the St. Louis Mini in two weeks. We started slowly (6:30/km), but gained in speed towards the end. It was just a beautiful Spring day --- warm sunshine from the clear blue sky and a moderate wind made it quite a pleasant run. When back in town, dark clouds had gathered all over, and it started to get chilly. We did some shopping in Kroger and ran home with the groceries.

Exercise RideStrong (Cyclefit + core)
Time 45:00+30:00
Comments We started the CycleFit with short sprints with 80-90% effort and with slight recovery periods in between, and continued with longer steady climbs --- some pretty tough ones. We closed the session with a pyramid of sprints (10-20-30-20-20 seconds) with 100% in.

Core was a standard combination of abs and back; isometric and basic crunch w/ and w/o a weight --- a lot of stuff with elevated legs which after the CycleFit was quite a challenge.

We rode our bikes to SRSC. The morning was sunny and the temperature barely above 0C. What a great start to the weekend!

@ Fri 24/03/2006
Exercise Core/stretch (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments The stability balls were underfilled, so we only used mat. We started with some cardio (step-touch, grapevine), and then continued with squats and balancing. We trained inner and outer thighs on mat. Before going to the balancing and relaxing section we did some basic crunches and some lower back.

Balancing exercise was new and exiting, and quite challenging. It's difficult to imagine how hard it could be to stand on both feet. I guess Tomi particularly enjoyed the relaxation part. We ran to and from HPER.

@ Thu 23/03/2006
Exercise Irish step
Comments We performed in Mimi's "Intro to World Music and Culture" class again. We danced the four-hand reel and two hornpipe steps. The floor was extremely slippery, especially for hard shoes and their fiberglass toes and heels. The students were more receptive than last time, and they asked much more questions. You can find more pictures here.

@ Wed 22/03/2006
Exercise Run (Tomi)
Course CEM4
Distance 5.5K
Time 29:14
Comments +2C, sunny. Comfortably hard :-)

Tei spent almost an hour practicing the hornpipe step with Mimi for tomorrow's performance. I got a glance of the new studio. The old dance mat is still there, but now we have more room, more restrooms, a separate space for people to wait for their (next) class to begin or parents to await their kids, and windows, so that daylight gets in!

@ Mon 20/03/2006
Exercise Strength
Time 45:00
Comments A lot of squats on an elevated step. We trained chest and back with resistance bands and light weights. We ended the session with basic crunches and some variations. We skipped Heidi's CardioCore since our legs were burning already after the strength session, (and I still have issues with the Sciatica).

@ Sun 19/03/2006
Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 13.2K
Time 1:25:07
Comments Ave 147, +7C, sunny, N wind. The run that started easy and relaxed just got hard in the end. Strong head wind and stiff legs made the last 5K quite tedious. I guess that motivation was running low, too. We definitely need to get into speed workout!

My nerve problem that has improved quite a bit in the last few days got gradually a little worse during the first half of the run, but then did not remind of its existence for the rest of it.

We only have 21 days to the St. Louis Half Marathon. Today we reserved a place to stay: The Courtyard by Marriott, St. Louis Downtown. We may also have a chance to visit the Anheuser Busch Brewery. Yippee!

@ Fri 17/03/2006
Exercise Run
Course To Tapp Rd
Distance 7K
Time 45:45
Comments Ave 138, +8C, sunny, chilly and strong N wind. First run since my pinched sciatic nerve problem was diagnosed. The foot barely hurt, and it did not feel like numb or failing at all.

@ Thu 16/03/2006
Exercise Pilates (sampler)
Time 45:00
Comments Slow paced exercise that concentrated mainly in form when training the core but also leg muscles. Tomi enjoyed it, but it made me sleepy.

@ Wed 15/3/2006
Exercise Irish step
Time 1:30:00
Comments We had an extra class during this Spring break, since we are going to perform again next week. We mostly practiced the Hornpipe steps in hard shoes, and briefly walked through the 4-hand a couple of times.

@ Tue 14/03/2006
Exercise Strength
Time 45:00
Comments This was an easy and slow paced workout --- good for recovery from yesterday's super tempo session. We used a resistance band a lot to train the upper body muscles, with and without a partner. Tomi ran to and from HPER.

@ Mon 13/03/2006
Exercise Cardio Core
Time 60:00
Comments We missed the first ten minutes, because we were waiting in front of the gym MS3 (scheduled for Spring break), but the class took action in MS1 (the regular space).

The leader, Heidi, was as energetic as usual, if not even more so. She had some new sequences of steps, shuffles, grapevines, V's, and mambos. In core section we mostly trained abs with the ball --- crunches and planks.

@ Sat 11/03/2006
Exercise CycleFit
Time 45:00
Comments We woke to thunder and heavy rain at 6:45am. There was no end to the rain to be seen, but we took our bikes out. Not so surprisingly, the campus was totally empty. We were soaked when we got to SRSC.

Pretty many brave minds made it to the CycleFit. The workout was pretty effective, too --- we did speed workout, short and fast climbs, steady long climbs and some head wind riding.

The core session was canceled, but our riding in the pouring rain counts as quite hardcore (pointed out by one of the CycleFit participants). Actually, it turns out the session was not canceled --- we just didn't read the Spring break schedule right.

@ Fri 10/03/2006
Exercise Core + Stretch (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments This was a fun exercise, and quite challenging! We warmed up by bouncing on the ball and doing all kind of steps, marching, jacks and quads exercises at the same time. We continued with a series of crunches on the mat and planks on the ball. We finished the core section balancing on the ball and lifting legs with eyes open and closed. Guess which one is harder!?

@ Thu 09/03/2006
Exercise DWE (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments The (substitute) leader made us work out really hard today! We did both strength training and cardio. We moved a lot across the pool against and to the stream. We did speed intervals walking, running and skiing with a little easier recovery periods in between. That took the heart rate up!

@ Wed 08/03/2006
Exercise Irish step
Time 1:30:00
Comments We practiced the first hornpipe step (in hard shoes), and learned another. It's pretty similar to the first one. In two weeks we are going to present both steps in Mimi's Ethnomusicology class. Last ten minutes Mimi taught me again the intricate hornpipe step that blows my brain. It's really neat --- and fun to master some day ...

@ Tue 07/03/2006
Exercise Run
Course CEM
Distance 1*1050, 2*450, 4*250
Time 5:20, 2:25, 2:14 - 2:50 (41:2))
Comments Ave 142, +9C, E wind. Finally we had a chance to go back to our interval training routine. Since we have not done any tempo runs for a long time, we started cautiously. Hopefully, we can add intensity and distance soon.

Afterthought (10/03): I guess we won't. I have a pinched sciatic nerve and running, or any kind of impact inflicts excruciating pain in my right calf that radiates all the way up to the knee and the hip. So we'll stick to DWE, CycleFit and strength training for now. Bummer!

@ Mon 06/03/2006
Exercise Strength (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments A lot of biceps and triceps today. Not that much feet. We used heavier weights and the resistance band. We ran to and from HPER. The weather is really chilly for +5C --- W wind is freezing.

@ Sun 05/03/2006
Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 10K
Time 1:00:56
Comments Ave 143, +4C, cloudy. Rain is coming (again). We tried to maintain the half marathon pace, and succeeded.

@ Sat 04/03/2006
Exercise CycleFit
Time 45:00
Comments We simulated the team pursuit in Tour de France. We rode one of the stages from 2003 route with three huge hills. We took our bikes out this chilly (-3C) Saturday morning and rode back and forth to SRSC. Quite a workout!

Exercise Core
Time 30:00
Comments We used mat and gliding booties. We did some planks and crunches. There were practically no breaks, or chance to catch breath between different drills.

@ Fri 03/03/2006
Exercise Run
Course CEM4
Distance 5.5K
Time 32:29
Comments Ave 143, +7C, sunny. Heart rate stayed moderate but the run did not feel that easy at all.

@ Wed 01/03/2006
Exercise Strength (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments The usual: biceps, triceps, quads and abs. We used heavy weights, a resistance band and a mat --- there were not enough balls for everyone. We ran to HPER, and walked back, in a nice +13C breezeless, but cloudy Spring weather.

Exercise Irish Step
Time 1:30:00
Comments Since there is going to be another demo on this coming Saturday, the class was spent practicing the 6-hand reel in addition to the 4-hand reel and the slipjig we performed in November. However, since I missed the last week's practices and I am still a bit sick, I'm also going to skip the demo this time. It's amazing how easy it is to forget a step sequence once mastered! The next opportunity for performance is in three weeks in Mimi's class. Then we'll have a hard floor, so we might do some hornpipe in hard shoes.
