Exercise Run
Course To Tapp Rd
Distance 7K
Time 42:39
Comments Ave 142, +12C, cloudy, no significant breeze. First run for Tomi in two weeks, and I had hard time keeping up! According to him, the run went surprisingly well, although his heart rate was pretty high.

Exercise Run
Course CEM4
Distance 5.5K
Time 32:13
Comments Ave 148, +10C, sunny, W wind. Tomi was diagnosed with bronchitis today, and was prescribed some medication that'll keep him entertained for a couple of days. My symptoms have been limited to a running nose. I felt relatively strong, even if I have tendency to start a little too fast. I simply can't control my speed when running alone --- or rather, I run much faster when running alone.

Exercise Olympic Ice Hockey Gold medal game
Comments Finland lost the heartbreaker to Sweden 3-2. Finnish media reports it as a bitter defeat, but I don't think it was bitter. Finns played well and with a big heart. Our neighbors just were a little bit better.

Exercise Watching Olympics
Comments We are both sick, so you don't see much activity in this forum. Tomi has had "flu-like symptoms" for a week, and I just starting to feel like I'm getting sick, too. I wish watching Finnish men in Ice hockey and Curling counts as exercise!

Exercise Run
Course CEM4
Distance 5.5K
Time 32:27
Comments Ave 151, +5C, sunny. Nice run in Springlike weather. Tomi is still not well, so I ran alone.

Exercise Run (Tei)
Course To Tapp Rd
Distance 7K
Time 41:00
Comments Ave 156, -6C, sunny, no wind. Tomi has a common cold so I ran alone. Except the speed and the comfort level, this run was not a success. I had too many layers on --- on top of sports bra I had a light bottom layer and then a cotton T-shirt under the jacket. The T was a mistake. The pants felt like falling off, too.

I though the trail is going to be slippery or wet, or both, so I put the trail running shoes on. I hate my trail running shoes (La Sportiva Exum). They are clumsy and probably too big to me, and they have practically no cushioning. The laces has to be retied every 500 meters. In the process of doing that and putting the gloves back on I accidentally shut off the watch a couple of times.

Someone has been camping by the trail for a few weeks now --- must be fun in this weather. The tent is still there. The trash just keeps accumulating. There even were several black trash bags ON the trail!

Exercise Run
Course CEM4
Distance 5.5K
Time 34:37
Comments Ave 143, +15C, cloudy, light rain. Easy and short run in unseasonably warm weather. Some thunderstorms and strong wind are on their way tonight, and tomorrow is going to be much much colder.

Exercise Strength (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments This time we used just the light weights and resistance bands (plus mat). We trained arms and legs in all possible ways. We did some crunches and very little back. As fun as always!

Exercise Irish step
Time 1:30:00
Comments Except the warm-up we worked on hard-shoe. We started with treble-down and treble-hop-back drills to reel, jig and hornpipe rhythms. Then we reviewed the basic hornpipe step. The rest of the class we were divided to two groups. While Zilia and Chrystal continued with the basic step, Mimi taught me an intricate hornpipe step. It is demanding both physically and mentally; it has many tricky pieces and the rhythm is somewhat awkward.

Although hard-shoe dance is much more difficult than soft-shoe, it is more shin-friendly, and so much fun. Bring in 'Da Noise!

Exercise Run (Tomi)
Course From Alamo
Distance 4.3K
Comments Tomi dropped off the rental car, and ran back from Alamo; fast downhill to headwind.

Exercise Strength
Time 45:00
Comments We did a lot of squats on elevated step with and without weights. We used both light and heavy weights to train biceps and triceps, shoulders and upper back.

Exercise Cardio-core
Time 60:00
Comments As usual, we did fast-pace series of step-touch, grapevine, cha-cha's, walk-circles, knee lifts, and bicep curls, but also some squats and front kicks.

Besides doing a lot of basic crunches, we used a light weight in core training; twist and turn in plank position.

@ Sun 14/02/2006
Comments We drove to Lafayette on Saturday to attend the Barleywine and Strong ale Tasting at the Lafayette Brewing Company.

After the tasting we briefly visit Chumley's. The bartender spent six months as an exchange student in Rauma.

We stayed again in the Loeb House Inn Bed and Breakfast. This is our third time in this Inn and it is as marvelous as it's been before. Their breakfast is just delicious.

On our way back home we go to the Pacers' game against San Antonio Spurs, the defending NBA champions. Pacers lost but not hands down. Afterwards, we attended a meeting with Sarunas Jasikevicius, Pacers' Lithuanian guard, who is not a big fan of Midwest let alone the US (his own words). The meeting was organized by BAFSA and Lithuanian-Americans in Indy.

Exercise Run
Course RTT + Clear Creek Trail
Distance 16.4K
Time 1:51:22
Comments Ave 140, +1C, sunny with light breeze. We took advantage of the last Spring day before the winter storm forecast for the coming weekend. We will be in Lafayette for the barleywine and strong ale tasting on Sat and Sun anyway. We aimed for time rather than distance. Because of the last few days' numerous quad workouts, the feet started to feel a bit numb in the end.

Exercise Strength (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments We did squats w/ and w/o weights. We also used gliding disks in squats and planks. We used resistance tubes to exercise biceps and triceps and upper back. This faculty/staff session is so much more fun than the regular mixed/student sessions! Everyone seems to know everyone. And the atmosphere is so relaxed and encouraging.

Exercise Irish step
Time 1:30:00
Comments We did the ordinary soft shoe warmup, followed by the across-the-floor spring-two-threes and hop-one-two-threes. Then we put the hard shoes on. We did some basic drill of treble-downs and treble-hop-backs. Then we practiced treble-hop-backs to jig, reel and hornpipe.

Exercise KickBoxing
Time 45:00
Comments Relatively easy-tempo workout with A LOT of repetitions of jabs, crosses, and very few kicks, and some shuffling to cover more floor. I see that the theme is "KISS". I really miss Carmen and her intricate routines of jabs, crosses, kicks, jumping jacks and shuffles - they were both effective and a lot of fun!

Exercise Strength
Time 30:00
Comments We did biceps curls and triceps extensions balancing on the ball, and many repetitions of squats again, but this time with a twist --- slow ups and downs 1-2-3. On the mat we did a series of crunches and push-ups. No back training this time, which is good since my back was a little sore for a while after the Saturday-s's class. It's been fine since.

@ Mon 06/02/2006
Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 10K
Time 1:00:40
Comments Ave 145, +3C, sunny. The groundhog was obviously wrong; we are not having six more weeks of winter. We did a couple of four-minute tempo runs midway through the 10-K jog. We finished with some short and quick strides. On our way home, we did some grocery shopping.

@ Sun 05/02/2006
Exercise Run
Course S
Distance 10K
Time 1:02:29
Comments Ave 144, -1C, cloudy, chilly SW wind. We ran this historic "South Ten" route for the first time in many years. The pace was relaxing and slow, and the heart rate low.

Exercise Run
Course To/from SRSC
Comments +2C, cloudy. Brisk morning jog through white campus. Fresh snow is everywhere, on the ground, on top of cars and on trees. We spotted a hawk in our yard praying smaller birds, that are attracted by trees abundant with berries.

Exercise Core
Time 30:00
Comments We arrived late. We made ab and back exercises on ball. We used "sliding socks" to slide feet in and out in planks.

Virgin snow inspired us to take some pictures of the campus on this early Saturday morning. Pictures from top left to right and down: 1. Tomi runs on 8th Street, 2. Snow covered pines, 3. Tomi and the Main Library (now Herman B Wells Library), 4. Tei in front of SRSC, 5. Railroad tracks, 6. Tei runs on central campus, 7. Jordan river, 8. More snow covered IU campus, 9. Bikes by Ballantine Hall, 10. Herman B Wells, IU President 1932-1968, 11. Maxwell Hall (in front) and Student Building, 12. Kirkwood Observatory

@ Thu 02/02/2006
Exercise KickBoxing
Time 45:00
Comments The class basically consisted of repeated series of jumping jacks and power jacks (with a deep squat), rope jumping, jabs and crosses, hooks and uppercuts, and some front kicks combined to jabs, instead of intricate choreographies we've done in some other classes. It was not too interesting or challenging, least to say. Curiously, most of the series we only practiced with one side (right).

Exercise Strength
Time 30:00
Comments We started with intensive biceps curls with weights, and quickly moved to triceps and shoulders. Then we did some squats, and push-ups on the ball. We finished with ab workout on the ball --- mostly crunches with and without twist. The new technique we learned today was the small "pumping-up" in squats and crunches. Pretty effective!

Exercise DWE (Tomi)
Time 45:00
Comments Mostly strength training

Exercise Irish step
Time 1:30:00
Comments We practiced some jig steps, and then Humorous Abandon (four-hand jig figure dance). We finished with Texas step (reel). Next time we'll do some hard shoe (Mimi promised!)
