Exercise Trekking
Course Treadmill
Time 45:00
Comments Ave 149. First time on treadmill. We did a couple sets of tempo runs and one set of climbing.

Exercise Core
Time 30:00
Comments Some basic crunches and series of planks on mat. Relatively easy this time. On top of these exercises we bicycled six kilometers to and from SRSC.

@ Mon 30/01/2006
Exercise Strength
Time 45:00
Comments We used mat, ball and weights. Did some interesting workouts with the back against the wall, with the ball in between.

Exercise Cardio-core
Time 60:00
Comments We started with high-tempo series of 'V's, touch-steps, grapevines and cha-chas, then switched to squats and knee-lifts. The last 25 minutes we spent on basic and not-so-basic crunches. I guess this efficient Monday double-header will soon pay off.

I could add some six kilometers of bicycling to today's exercise regime; we rode our bikes to and from SRSC. When coming back we had a nasty, icy rain and headwind.

Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance ~20K
Time 1:50:27
Comments Ave 136, +10-12C, cloudy. Strangely it does not feel that warm, though.

We got up early this morning. Instead of going to our regular Saturday morning core warm-up, we visited this year's first Winter Farmers' Market. We bought spinach, arugula, onions and ground lamb, all organic.

Then we headed out for a longer run. We explored the old railroad bed further South than we usually run. We went all the way pass the highway 37. We turned back where the trail enters someone's backyard. It was a very nice and relatively easy-paced run. On our way back home we bought some Sobe 'super energy supplement' and chips at Kroger.

Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 10K
Time 1:04:29
Comments Ave 141, +9C, cloudy, S wind. First run in nearly a week. "Easy," says Tomi.

@ Thu 26/01/2006
Exercise Cardio-core (F/S)
Time 45:00
Comments We did several variations of the 'V' step, some isometric ab exercises and basic crunches on mat.

@ Wed 25/01/2006
Exercise DWE (Deep Water Exercise)
Time 45:00
Comments This was our first time in DWE. Funnily, it did not feel hard at all in the pool, but wait when you get out of the water! We trained abs and upper and lower back, shoulders and chest, and of course the feet got a lot of exercise for free. I found it hard to keep balance when doing some of the movements. Maybe it would have been easier without the buoyancy belt? It was also hard to stay at the same place; I just kept on drifting around.

@ Mon 23/01/2006
Exercise Strength
Time 45:00
Comments We did squats and push-ups using the elevated step. We also trained biceps, triceps, shoulders and chest with free weights and a resistance-tube. We finished with planks and other ab exercises.

Exercise Cardio-core
Time 60:00
Comments The first 30 minutes we did some relatively high-tempo sequences of marching, 'V's, touch-steps, shuffles, jumping jacks and squats. That did not really bring my heart rate up, but it did make me sweat.

The last half an hour was dedicated to abs and back and chest. Among basic crunches we did some "jackknives" and "switches" passing the ball around in the circle. We also exercised lower back, and -- surprise surprise --- did some planks and push-ups on mat.

@ Sun 22/01/2006
Exercise Run
Course Cascades-Dunn-8th
Time 1:12:47
Comments Ave 136, +3-4C, cloudy, no breeze. Comfortable, slow run. THE hill did not kill me this time.

@ Sat 21/01/2006
Exercise Core
Time 30:00
Comments Some isometric, a lot of crunches.

Exercise Run
Course To/from SRSC
Distance 6K
Comments +4C, cloudy, strong N wind. Easy jog through the quiet campus.

Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 10K
Time 1:02:11
Comments Ave 141, +13C, cloudy. Tomi is back in town! This was a nice and easy run. The weather, although unseasonable, was almost perfect; usually one need not sweat in shorts and t-shirt in January.

@ Wed 18/01/2006
Exercise Strength (Tei)
Time 45:00
Comments I attended the Faculty/Staff session. We trained pretty much every muscle group using light weights, resistance bands, gliding disks and mat.

Exercise Irish Step
Time 1:30:00
Comments We learned a whole six-hand reel today.

FLASHBACK: Finally, here are some pictures of the performance we gave in Mimi's ethnomusicology class on "Politics in Music" last November.

@ Tue 17/01/2006
Exercise Swim (Tomi)
Distance 1K
Time 22:00
Comments Out of breath.

Exercise Core (Tei)
Time 30:00
Comments On mat, isometric and planks. I may as well add some 7 kilometers of walking to today's exercise, like any other day's.

Walking today in the freezing rain I could not but praise the Brooks running jacket I bought recently. It really is water and wind resistant. When I got home, I just brushed the water off the surface, and the jacket was dry and ready to be put in the closet. Worth every single eighty dollars!

@ Mon 16/01/2006
Exercise Run (Tei)
Course CEM4
Distance 5.5K
Time 33:04
Comments Ave 143, +11C, sunny. The preliminary plan was to go to Strength and Cardio-core classes. But since there are not too many days in January here in Bloomington that are both sunny and warm (just kidding), I opted for a run; a few spurts in the cemetery can't be that hard, even if I conquered some major hills yesterday. Oh well, I ended up running four easy laps, averaging 6min/km.

@ Sun 15/01/2006
Exercise Run (Tei)
Course Cascades-Dunn-8th
Time 1:09
Comments Ave 146, +4C, partly cloudy, wind S. Oh boy, the hills! It sure feels that I've not run hills for a long time. Besides that, it was a nice run. The town is really peaceful --- probably everyone is inside watching Colts game. Go Colts! (Colts drops 21-18 in the heartbreaker to Steelers after coming back from 21-3 deficit, and failing the last field goal. Damn!)

@ Sat 14/01/2006
Exercise Run (Tomi)
Course Viikinlahti, Hki
Time 2:15:00
Comments +1, cloudy, strong wind 8m/s. Icy slippery.

Exercise Run (Tei)
Course To/from SRSC
Distance 6K
Comments 0-+1C, strong NW wind. Light run that felt excessively hard; there was mostly uphill to go, head wind to come back. Sun came out which was nice.

Exercise Core
Time 30:00
Comments A lot of isometric workout, especially "planks", some ball, and crunches while standing!

@ Thu 12/01/2006
Exercise Run (Tomi)
Course Vironkatu-2*Toolonlahti-Vironkatu (Hki)
Time 54:55
Comments +4C, comfy hard.

Exercise Soccer (Tomi)
Time 45:00

Exercise Run (Tei)
Course RTT
Distance 13.2K
Time 1:15:XX (1K 5:35; 3.5K 20:29; 5K 29:57; 6.6K 38:20; 8.2K 47:01; 9.7K 55:54)
Comments Ave 151, +12C, sunny, strong S wind. What an awesome Spring weather to run, sunny and bright. Gusty breeze made it a challenge from time to time, but it also had a nice cooling effect. Running felt strong and relatively easy (max heart rate was something like 159).

@ Wed 11/01/2006
Exercise Irish step
Time 1:30:00
Comments We reviewed some "old" reel steps: Texas, Diane and Maple. I'm really looking forward to moving forward in this class, like learning new steps and doing some hard shoe.

@ Mon 09/01/2006
Exercise Run (Tei)
Course CEM4
Distance 5.5K
Time 31:35
Comments Ave 155, +5C, twilight, no significant breeze.

@ Sun 08/01/2006
Exercise Run
Course Kokomo, IN
Distance 2M
Comments +1C, cloudy. We run downtown to pick up the car we left there overnight. Gee, it felt nice to run after a while.

Before taking Tomi to the Indy airport, we visit Athletic Annex to get Tei a waterproof and windproof running shell. After painstaking decision making process she chooses Brooks Element jacket (black) for $89.90.

@ Sat 07/01/2006
Comments We soon leave Chicagoland and drive all the way to Kokomo. On our way we visit the place that once was Aberdeen Brewing Company, in Aberdeen near Valparaiso, IN. They don't make their own beer anymore, and I have heard that their guest beer selection has seen better days. Now they only have a couple of craft beers on tap. Food is ok and lot. And it is quite a "new" experience for us that someone is smoking in the restaurant.

In Kokomo we visit Vincenzo's Coffee House (no website yet); a nice new place transformed from a historic pool hall and cigar shop to a place offering world class beers. A couple of beer enthusiastics really can make a difference!

The most interesting pick of the night is the beers from the Bell's Wheat Project. Unfortunately, Vincenzo's only has Two, Four and Love left. Actually, these beers are more like German style Hefeweizen, not Belgian style Wit as "wheat" here in the US is usually known. Interesting experimentation, though.

Paul Stout(sic!) entertains us, and gives out a guitar to win in a raffle. We are not lucky --- Or are we? I can't play it anyway.

@ Sat 07/01/2006
Comments Hampton Inn offers continental breakfast, complemented with warm waffles and sausages. We enjoy some cold cereal and fresh fruit with yogurt. Our goal today is to drive to Chicago to cast our votes in Finnish presidential elections. We get to the Honorary Consulate of Finland just 30 minutes after opening at 10am., and four voters have already been there. The consulate is actually the office of Frederick C. Niemi", Attorney at Law. Note the cool voting booth!

@ Fri 06/01/2006
Comments At Floyd's we taste on draft:
  • Drunk Monk (Hefeweizen), 5% ABV, 20 IBU, $6 23oz -- well balanced classic German style Hefe
  • Merciless Minger ESB, 6% ABV, 50 IBU, $5 20oz -- significant roasted aroma, not typical ESB but niiice!
  • Caligulan Imperial Cream Ale, 7.5%, $5 20oz -- a lot of fruit as in TF's beers in general; a guy next table characterizes it as grapefruit. He hated it, we love it :-)
  • Thulza Doom IPA, 8%, $5 12oz -- fruity, as well.
  • Bob Da Broot Scotch Ale (Wee heavy), 9%, 25 IBU, $6 snifter -- sweet, plentiful of raisin
  • Black Sun Stout, 6.2%, 50 IBU, $5 20oz -- on nitro, a lot of citrus and hops for a stout
  • Liefman Frambozen (guest beer), $6 -- pretty authentic lambic

We don't taste their flagship Alpha King, since it has been widely available in Bloomington, as well as Robert The Bruce (Scottish ale) and Pride and Joy (mild ale). We split a house salad, and a pizza with grilled artichoke hearts, roasted peppers, kalamata olives and goat cheese.

We ask the staff to call us a cab, since we have no intention to drive back to the motel. They have never done it before, so it takes some time, both calling and for the cab to arrive. We wait for 40 minutes and almost give up.

@ Fri 06/01/2006

@ Fri 06/01/2006
Exercise Swim
Course Hampton Inn and Suites pool, Munster, IN
Comments It has been really chilly day with a strong wind and some flurries, which made driving (to Munster, IN) quite an effort -- not that much the flurries but THE wind. We spend a few precious minutes in the warm motel pool before heading out for beer and food at Three Floyd's Brewing Company.

Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 10K (GP T GP)
Time 1:03:06
Comments Ave 143, +8-10C, cloudy, nasty W wind that turned to N. We run the first and third 2 miles to marathon goal pace (10:00), and the middle 2 miles little faster. The temperature dropped more than two degrees Celsius during our run.

Exercise KickBoxing
Time 45:00
Comments Fast paced exercise.

Time 30:00
Comments We did some ab exercises against the wall, used some ball and little mat.

@ Mon 02/01/2006
Exercise Run
Course RTT
Distance 13.2K
Time 1:20:15
Comments Ave 152, +15.4C, partly cloudy. We took advantage of unseasonably warm and humid weather and went for a mid-distance run. Timing was optimal, too. Just five minutes after getting home the sky exploded. We have the first "Severe weather alert" of the year: strong thunderstorm watch.
